Refill… Not Landfill

Refill….Not Landfill (2nd-5th grade)

Presenter: Susan Cowperthwaite (2nd-5th grade)

Activity:   Show students a little about refilling cartridges.  The students learn about the importance of recycling cartridges.  Each group of two students is given an old cartridge.  Then they can count how many cartridges they saved from going to a landfill, if they refilled them with ink.  Students guess how many cartridges are used in a school, city, county, country, etc. Each student is given a piece of plastic and they place it in a jar with some soil and the jar is capped.  The jar is left in the classroom. How long before it will take the plastic to become soil?  What happens to a landfill if it takes so long to break down the material?  Students make their own poster with a title about recycling and draw pictures.
