Map-Making
Map-Making (7th -12th grade)
Topic: Using in the field, math and geometry skills to create maps
Presenter: Kelda Miller, Divine Earth Gardening Project
Class begins with a brief description of map-making and examples of different types of maps. Then class moves out into the field to measure their pace, learn triangulation to place objects, and learn how to guess the heights of trees, etc. Students are also encouraged to use their senses to identify wind direction, traffic paths, sun path through the sky, and much more. Last half-hour of class is students work in teams to map out part of the school’s property. A few long measuring tapes are required.
Homework questions:
- What is your pace? And how is it useful to know?
- In the Northern hemisphere, which direction would you want to face your house?
- If you already know two points on a map, how can you use this to place another point?
