Creating Seed Balls
Creating Seed Balls (7th -12th grade)
Topic: How seeds grow and tricks for helping them succeed.
Presenter: Kelda Miller, Divine Earth Gardening Project
First part of class is discussion/drawing about how seeds work. This will vary according to age group. Second part of class is description of different types of seed balls and why they are useful, and why we would want to encourage/discourage plants in certain places. Third part of class, we dive in and construct different types of seed balls out of seed, compost, and clay. All hands will get muddy. A place to clean up and a warm place for the seed balls to dry, are required.
Homework questions:
- What is the first root from a seed called?
- What can you tell about a plant after its first leaf has emerged?
- Why would creating a seed ball out of clay be helpful to the seed?
