Composting and Worm Bins

Composting & Worm Bins(7th - 12th grade)

Topic: How to make wonderful soil out of rich compost.

Presenter: Kelda Miller, Divine Earth Gardening Project

The class will first learn the basics of how things decompose, and how humans can use that knowledge to create non-smelly nutrient-rich compost piles. This conversation can be adapted according to age group and education about the topic. Then, according to what resources are onsite, the class can gather material/make compost piles, or turn/maintain/evaluate compost piles, or help put a worm bin together/maintain a worm bin. Some funds may be needed for new worm bin construction.

Homework questions:

  • What makes compost stinky?
  • What are the two main layers in good-smelling compost?
  • Why are worms so important?
